Rewrite, expand, and summarize with AI

Beyond drafting, the AI assistant can rework existing content. AI authoring is free on every plan.

Before you begin

  • Open a topic with existing content to rework.

Always review and edit AI-generated content before publishing. The AI produces a starting point, not final copy. Check for accuracy, tone, and completeness before making it live.

Rework a selection with inline AI

The fastest way to rework existing text is the inline AI action bar:

  1. Select the text you want to change.

  2. Press Cmd+/ (or Ctrl+/ on Windows/Linux).

  3. Click an action in the bar that appears:

    • Rewrite: rephrase with improved clarity, tone, or structure while preserving the meaning.

    • Expand: add detail, context, examples, or explanation.

    • Simplify: condense into fewer, clearer words.

    • Improve: fix grammar, clarity, and flow.

  4. The AI generates a replacement and shows a diff preview.

  5. Accept (Cmd+Enter) to apply, or Dismiss (Escape) to discard. When the change spans multiple blocks, accept or reject each block individually.

See Inline AI editing for the full inline AI workflow.

Rework from the chat panel

The AI Assistant tab in the right sidebar offers the same kinds of changes through quick actions like Improve writing and Simplify, or any prompt you type. The chat panel returns its rewrite as a color-coded diff you accept or reject block by block. Use it when you want to discuss the change first or pull in other topics and components with @/# mentions. See AI chat panel.

Improve the whole topic

To improve an entire topic instead of a selection, press Cmd+/ with nothing selected (or use the AI: Improve slash command). The AI reviews the whole topic for clarity, structure, and flow and returns a diff you review block by block.

Review each suggested change carefully. The AI may recommend restructuring that does not fit your content strategy or audience. Nothing is applied until you accept it.

Tips

  • Rewrite works well for adjusting tone, making content more formal, more conversational, or more concise.

  • Expand is useful for fleshing out bullet points into full paragraphs.

  • Simplify helps tighten dense passages and create short summary sections from detailed content.

  • Improve, run with nothing selected, gives a whole-topic review. Use it as a final check before Publish a web site.

Chain multiple AI actions for a polished result. Draft first, then expand thin sections, rewrite for consistent tone, and finish with a whole-topic Improve pass.
