Link between topics

Topic links create cross-references between topics. They display as inline pills showing the target topic's title and update automatically if the target is renamed.

  1. Place your cursor where you want the link.

  2. Type / and select Topic Link, or click the topic link button in the toolbar.

  3. In the picker dialog, search for and select the target topic.

  4. A styled pill appears inline showing the target topic's title.

  • Topic links render as clickable links on Publish a web site, pointing to the target topic's published page.

  • If you rename the target topic, every topic link referencing it updates automatically.

  • If you delete a linked topic, the Content health indicators system flags the broken reference.

Always use topic links instead of regular links (Cmd+K) for cross-references within your project. Topic links stay in sync when topics are renamed or reorganized, while regular links would break silently.

  • Topic links — for cross-references to other topics within the same project. They stay in sync and resolve correctly across publication targets.

  • Regular links (Cmd+K) — for external URLs or links outside the project.

Topic links resolve differently depending on the publication target. When you Publish a web site a Create and organize a map, topic links point to the correct page within that specific published site, even if the same topic appears in multiple maps.
