Inline AI editing
Press Cmd+/ (or Ctrl+/ on Windows/Linux) to open an AI prompt directly in the editor. Rewrite selected text or generate new content without leaving your document. Press Escape to dismiss the prompt without making changes.
Inline AI is free on every plan. You can also start it from the sparkles button in the selection toolbar, or with the Inline AI slash command.
Two modes
Inline AI works in two modes depending on whether you have text selected:
Mode | Trigger | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Rewrite | Select text, then press Cmd+/ | Shows an action bar with Rewrite, Expand, Simplify, and Improve buttons |
Generate | Place cursor on an empty line, then press Cmd+/ | Shows a freeform text input for describing what to write |
Rewrite mode
Select the text you want to change.
Press Cmd+/ (or Ctrl+/ on Windows/Linux).
The action bar appears with options:
Rewrite: rephrase the text while preserving its meaning
Expand: add detail and elaboration
Simplify: condense into fewer, clearer words
Improve: fix grammar, clarity, and flow
Click an action.
The AI generates a replacement and shows a diff preview.
Generate mode
Place your cursor on an empty line where you want new content.
Press Cmd+/ (or Ctrl+/ on Windows/Linux).
Type a description of what to write, for example, "Add a prerequisites section listing the required permissions."
Press Enter.
The AI generates content and shows a diff preview.
Diff preview
After the AI generates its output, the editor shows a visual diff:
Green highlights: new or added content
Red highlights: removed or replaced content
Structural callouts: notes about block-level changes, such as an added heading or a removed list
A control bar appears with options:
Accept (Cmd+Enter): applies the changes to your document.
Dismiss (Escape): discards the AI output and restores the original text.
Partial accept
When reviewing a diff, you can accept or reject individual blocks rather than the entire suggestion. Each changed block has its own accept/reject controls, so you can keep the parts that work and discard the rest.
You can trigger Cmd+/ multiple times to iterate. If the first result is not quite right, dismiss it and try a different prompt or action.
Inline AI is disabled while Track changes and suggestions (track changes) is on, because block-level AI edits cannot be recorded as inline suggestions. The sparkles button shows "Turn off suggest mode to use AI editing." Turn Suggest mode off to apply AI changes.
Always review and edit AI-generated content before publishing. The AI produces a starting point, not final copy. Check for accuracy, tone, and completeness before making it live.
